Kingston University is delighted to recognise Mr Anthony Browne's achievements with the award of Doctor of Education, honoris causa.

Mr Anthony Browne, writer and illustrator of Children's books, won the internationally prestigious Hans Christian Anderson Award for illustration in 2000 (IBBY), which was last won by a UK nominee, Eleanor Farjeon in 1956. He has twice won the Kate Greenaway medal (CILIP), which is
the most important prize for illustration in the UK. He has been a significant influence in creating picture books for older children, incorporating the more sophisticated use of visual clues in complex background imagery.

Anthony Browne has generously made his work available to, and
co-operated closely with, the Books Alive! research project in the School of Education at Kingston University. This project is developing ways of enhancing pupil's literacy through interactive multimedia
representations of story-books in conjunction with teacher colleagues in partner schools. The team has found his deep interest in the relationship between pictures and words inspirational and he, in turn, is excited by the 'moving image' interpretations of his work by the team. He generates surrealist 'visual surprises', which draw pupils and teachers into his texts.
